2007 HETAC NEW PROFESSIONAL
Melissa Charters, El Camino Real High School (Region 9)

Melissa has been a HECT teacher and member of HETAC for two years teaching Foods and Nutrition, Teen Living and Introduction to Careers 2. As a new teacher, she has dedicated herself to connect to the world of Home Economics Careers and Technology by attending the L & M Conference, New & Returning Teacher and FHA-HERO workshops conducted by the CDE HECT staff.

Knowing the value of FHA-HERO as a previous high school member and president, she sponsored El Camino Real�fs first FHA-HERO chapter and led her students to compete in regional and state CREs and the national STAR event. She also started the Careers through Culinary Arts Program at her school, spending many hours assisting her students in preparation for culinary arts competition. Two of her students received $15,000 and $23,000 scholarships at prestigious culinary institutions.
